Introduction to periodisation



To provide an overview of periodisation as it might apply in a Rugby Union context.


The S&C coach will be able to create a multi-cycle periodised programme for strength and power development and maintenance.

Key terms

Complex training:

The player completes a series of sets using a heavy resistance and then completes a series of explosive lighter loaded exercises.

Contrast training:

The player completes a single set of alternating heavy loaded strength type exercise following by a lighter more explosive exercise.

Daily undulating periodisation:

This is when the day to day strength and power training core exercises or lifts are varied in terms of intensity.

Linear periodisation:

When exercises or lifts are prescribed based on the same relative intensity such that a short phase of training, for example over a 4 week phase, is completed using a 10RM load for the core lifts or exercises in each training session.


The concept of organising training and competition into cycles or blocks. The concept is also broader than simply using a template as it draws from the principles of training as described in the Pre-Level 1 S&C course.

Post-activation potentiation:

This is when the performance of an explosive type action or movement is enhanced following a previous strength related exercise.
