Types of training

Complex and contrast training approaches

Complex training differs from contrast training in that it (complex) requires the player to complete several sets of heavy strength training repetitions, for example 3-6 sets of the back squat using loads greater than 80% 1RM followed by lighter load power exercises such as plyometric jumps. Contrast on the other hand involves alternating strength exercise with a power exercise from set to set. While the terms have been use interchangeably (Mihalik et al 2008) they are different methods and the S&C coach should be clear as to the method to be used. Contrast training has been shown to be very effective at improving explosiveness both in short and longer term training studies (Duthrie et al 2002, Baker 2003, Mihalik et al 2008). While there is evidence to suggest that even beginners can effectively benefit from contrast training, most experts and S&C coaches will preference the contrast method for well-trained athletes or for those possessing greater levels of strength (Duthrie et al 2002, Janz et al 2008).
