Mesocycles

Duration of mesocycle

Not all pre-season periods will be limited to an 8-week mesocycle. This period may extend up to a 20-week mesocycle for some. The S&C coach therefore must have the capacity and understanding of longer-term planning in order to satisfy the yearly variations between different levels and different.

To accommodate this we present a number of mesocycles that focus on different goals. For example, we provide phases where hypertrophy, maximum strength, strength and power and maintenance of strength and power are the key goals. The S&C coach must also be aware of the need to individualise for the player given that some players will be returning from injury, others will have specific needs in relation to strength, power, speed or muscle mass gains. In addition, a number of players will be in a phase where recovery or unload training is the requirement.
