Coaching the snatch

Step 3 - Jump and catch overhead and then move into a ¼ squat position

From the standing upright and bar overhead position, the player now squats to a ¼ squat position. The S&C coach should assess from a side view, whether the bar is directly over the player’s footspace. This is important so as to ensure that the player is capable of progressing into a deeper squat position in the next progression.

Figure 5. Player is now in an overhead ¼ squat position. From here, he stands upright and then lowers the bar to the waist to complete this step of the progression.

The player may repeat steps 2-4 for a number of repetitions until a stable technique is demonstrated into a bar overhead ¼ squat position. Note as well that the player should be coached to repeat this sequence but at a faster tempo such that he or she moves into the ¼ squat from the JUMP and CATCH. Please observe the attached video below for steps 2-4.
