Coaching the snatch

Step 2 - Knee bend

Instruct the player to stand straight up with bar at crease of hips, shoulders back and weight on heels.

The player is now ready to move to the next step which requires the player to ‘jump and catch the bar overhead’.

The S&C coach should ensure that the player is stable and balanced in this standing position. Note that in the catch position, the player will have moved his/her feet outwards slightly. This occurs after the JUMP phase when the player’s feet return to the floor. From this bar overhead position, the player then moves into a ¼ squat position with the bar securely balanced overhead (see Figure 5 on next page).
