Coaching the snatch

Coaching methodology

We have previously described a step-by-step progression using a top down approach to coaching or teaching the clean. Again, we use a ‘top-down’ approach when using part method to introduce the power snatch and squat snatch lifts. Our step-by-step approach includes the following progression:

  1. Gripping the bar
  2. Knee bend
  3. Jumping and catching bar overhead
  4. Descending into ¼ squat with bar overhead
  5. Jump, catch and descend into deeper squat
  6. Deep overhead squat position
  7. Bend at waist
  8. Lower to the floor
  9. Lifting bar from floor
  10. The squat snatch

Our first step is to start by having the player find the correct grip.
