Derivatives versus complete lifts

If the goal of an exercise or a lift is to generate high power outputs in the assumption that such training will enhance the power and speed of the player, then completing derivations of the main lifts seems to be effective. Recent studies show that high power outputs can be generated using variations of the lifts such as the mid-thigh power clean and mid-thigh clean pulls (Comfort et al 2011). Further, it may not be at all necessary for the player to master the full deep squat clean or squat snatch lifts.

Numerous studies have shown that variations or derivatives of the clean (such as the mid-thigh power clean and the mid-thigh clean pull) generate high power outputs and as such it is the high power output that will impact on the player’s power development (Comfort et al 2011).
