Olympic style lifting

Introduction

Coaching the Olympic style lifts of the clean and jerk and the snatch are challenging to both the coach and the player. Thus, we must ask if coaching these lifts is of benefit to the Rugby player given the complexity of the lifts and perhaps the time cost in coaching the lifts.

Aim

This module aims to provide a detailed understanding of the benefits of using Olympic style weightlifting within the broader context of a resistance training programme. In addition the S&C coach will learn a top down coaching approach to the Olympic style lifts and some derivatives. Further this module aims to provide to the S&C coach a sample 8 week resistance training programme which progresses the strength and power development from the anatomical adaptation phase described in Level 1.

Outcome

  1. The coach will be able to articulate the potential benefits and limitations of using the Olympic style lifts in the power programming of the player
  2. The coach will be able to coach the Olympic style lifts and derivatives
  3. The coach will be able to plan an 8 week resistance training programme.
