Warm-up

Overview

The aim of the warm-up should be to increase body temperature and ensure normal dynamic range of motion about the joints of the body whilst also preparing the body for the movement patterns and impacts that relate directly to the activity that is about to occur. Traditionally, a pre-training warm-up included a short period of low intensity exercise such as jogging or cycling. Further, traditional pre-practice and pre-competition warm-ups included a static stretching component within the warm-up. This type of warm-up was believed to be helpful in preventing injury and in enhancing the subsequent sport or training performance (Corbin & Lindsey, 1988).

However, there is strong evidence to suggest that static stretching is counterproductive for later intense dynamic performance such as Rugby training (Fletcher & Jones, 2004). Further, a low intensity aerobic warm-up does not adequately prepare the player for subsequent multi-activity typical of training and practice.
