The principles of training

Interference

This principle informs us that some forms of training may interfere with another and so compromised fitness gains occur. An example of this is seen when a player attempts to gain general endurance while also looking to increase speed and strength. The endurance training may compromise strength and speed even though endurance capacity improves (Hennessy & Watson, 1994). However, when the Strength and Conditioning coach carefully places strength and endurance training within an overall integrated approach then he is more likely to effect gains in both components (Kraemer et al, 2003). Using a periodised approach to training limits the likelihood of interference and detraining occurring (Kraemer, 2008).

Clear programming and development and maintenance periods will guide the Strength and Conditioning coach in managing the volume and intensity of training for each period within the yearly plan (for more detail on this, see Periodisation in a later module).
