The principles of training


The principle of specificity states that the body or system being stressed will adapt to the stimulus imposed in a very specific manner (Schmidtbleicher 1992). This is a case of adaptation operating at its maximum level.

Having an understanding of the demands of the game of Rugby will ensure that the Strength and Conditioning coach can select and devise conditioning drills and activities that prepare the players to meet the specific challenges of match play. For example, drills and activities that develop a player’s horizontal power potential is an example of specific conditioning for the player. The key point of this principle is that the player’s training should be guided by the demands of the game in general and their position in particular.
